Gardeners’ Forum: “Tomatoes in a Greenhouse (Calgary)”

Posted by Natalie on Thursday, January 10, 2008 5:54 pm ASTHello Last year I planted tomatoes in my new greenhouse but had limited success. I did try and get out and shake the plants (I admit it did not happen everyday) but my huge plants produced very few tomatoes. Are there any varieties of tomatoes that are polinated more easily and will therefore hopefully produce better for me?

The greenhouse is too hot thereby preventing proper pollination. Second, too much nitrogen in your fertilizer. Some of the larger beefsteaks (ie Brandywine)are known for pollination problems because their flowers do not allow for the proper transfer of the pollen to the stigma. A good bee buzzing the flower or using a electric toothbrush or flicking the blossom will help.
