But now all I have is a north facing balcony, which gets sun in the morning, but that's about it. I had seen an idea for vertical gardens recently, and I think it's a great idea, basically, everything grows up, so you only need a small width planter, perfect for balconies. does anybody have any suggestions as to what I could plant? I'm thinking things like tomatos, peas, etc (things with vines) but don't remember enough about sun requirements for different things.

Posted by Ferne on Friday, March 7, 2008 12:32 pm ASTMost veggies won't produce in just north light. They need sun and plenty of it. The exception would be some of the leafy green stuff, like lettuce. Parsley makes a nice pot plant too. Most flowering plants also require at least some direct sun. Most things that are normally grown as shade plants and most that would be grown as a house plants could be grown on a north facing area in the summer. Browallia, impatience, and Fuchsia would be good pot plants that flower and could be brought inside in the fall. If you want climbing vines for height, again those that are shade plants outdoors or are normally grown as houseplants will work but most do not produce anything very showy in the way of flowers or fruit.
