Such criticism should not detract from the product as it is highly effective and Round-Up becomes bacteria food once it contacts the soil. Early spring barriers - plastic sheets etc can set weeds back on their heals and increase effectiveness of chemicals and tillage.

Posted by Heidi Madsen on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 10:57 pm ADTTry "stirring" the soil every other day. Simply run your rake up and down, in between the rows of plants. This will disturb any weeds that have started grow and they will die off. Another idea that does not require as much attention is to lay several sheets (3-5) of newspaper in between the rows and then cover with straw or mulch. This technique will also reduce the amount watering your garden requires and keep the roots of your plant cooler. It's also completley biodegradeable...come fall, simply rototil the leftover newspaper and straw into the soil. Also, I would stongly advise not to use any chemicals...afterall that's one of the benefits of growing your own food, right?
