Gardeners’ Forum: “Late Snowstorm...”

Posted by Kath on Friday, April 25, 2008 4:17 pm ADTI am hoping that either Veseys staff, or fellow gardeners will be able to answer this for me. Our ground was completely thawed out before that nasty snowstorm hit us (we are about 15 minutes north of St. Albert, AB). I (luckily) haven't planted anything outside yet, but will this set back the planting time for the seedlings I have started inside? Our last frost date is supposed to be May 7th, but the way things are going, I don't know if that is accurate. I am very new to Zone 3a, and am accustomed to a 5a :) Help!

Posted by Cheryl on Sunday, April 27, 2008 10:51 pm ADTI would still plant all of the cold weather crops, peas, lettuce, spinach, and even your potatoes ect. but I usually wait for the long weekend to plant the tomato, pepper ect. Last year we were still getting frosts up until June 26th. So be prepared to cover the tomatoes and beans but everything else should be alright. Zone 3 is a new adventure every year. Good Luck

I live in a zone 7a "snow free zone" and was devistated, as I had done alot shifting of plants into new and better locations. Thankfully things seem to have gotten back on track and I think everthing will smooth out by the last frost day. Mine was today, April 28th, and it has been nice ever day for the last week. Since where I am, water is more of an issue than cold, the slow release of snow did help my soil, and saved my well abit of work. As I said I have no real actual advice, just sympathy, and of course when all else fails I check the almanac. Good luck in your new zone. Tammy

The earth beneath that snow probably is still thawed. The snow acutally acts as an isolation against the cold. At worst you could delay your plant date by up to a week without hurting your seedlings to much. Andre
