Loads of manure & added grass clippings and lots of fall tree leaves. With in a fairly short time the soil becomes nice & loamy. Grass clippings add nitrogen to the soil that lasts for years. And you don't have to add anything when planting tomato's other than a little root stimulator to get them off to a good start.
