Posted by Sasha on Monday, March 23, 2009 3:28 PM ADTMy beloved forsythia (Northern gold) that I received as a mother's day gift about four years ago has had a rough winter. It has many broken branches and I'm wondering how I should prune it gently to encourage it's recovery. Also, do you have experience with moving an established forsythia? I'd like to move it to a more protected spot (away from the snow bank!) or perhaps it's better to build it a protective cover for forthcoming winters? One last question: do you have experience rooting branches to start new forsythia bushes?

Posted by jill verwey on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 8:55 PM ADTwe live in zone3ab zone, i have had great success rooting branches simply by pushing branches into ground surrounding bush anyplacing something on branch to keep it inthe ground, mine rooted first season, I then separted from main bush next season let the new branch continue to set roots and grow and third season transplanted to new location. have transplantd numberous bushes this way.

Posted by catherine on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 8:20 PM ADTI pruned my forsythia last year and did not pick up all the branches. They all rooted quickly and were growing very well. No need to even push the branches into the ground. I also pruned this winter , before any buds were out and put the branches in a bag, soil and water and they bloomed this spring and ready to plant. Waiting for the snow to melt here in Revelstoke, BC.
