I was given some blooming lilies a week ago, bought at a supermarket flower shop. The flowers are now dying and I was wondering what I should do to save the bulbs. I live in zone 5b, and it's too cold to plant them outside yet. Thanks.

You shoudl 'deadhead', meaning cut off the spent flower completely so only the green stalk is remaining. Continue to water and keep in a brightly lit place. When it gets a little warmer you can plant into your garden. It should come back next year and bloom in your garden.

Hi, just trim off the blossoms leaving as much of the stem as possible. Water the bulb as you would do for any house plant. If the stem is still green by the time you can plant out great it will die back naturally outside and can be removed when it becomes brown and pulls from the bulb easily. It might not flower next year but do not give up on it just mark the spot where it is planted. I have had great success with lilies given to me this way.

Just for your information...Squirrels LOVE the bulbs. I lost 6 plants from my garden last year...it seemed the squirrels were very determined to get at mine no matter what I did...Happy Gardening (oh!, it's nice to say that!!!)
