Posted by Rita Ho on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 1:15 am ADTHi, I am new to the forum. Will appreciate some help with the following: My LMM rose didn't survive last winter's cold weather (zone 5 - whitby, Ontario). Seeing there was no sign of life, I dug up the plant in July this year. Now lo and behold, I find 4 little Lucy(s) poking out of the ground near where Lucy was planted. What should I do with them now? How do I winterize them? Planted Miss Ellen Willmot 2 years ago. Shrub is now about 5' tall. Has not seen any flowers yet. How old does plant have to be to produce blooms? Many thanks.

You can transplant them now if you like or leave them where they are, either way you should mulch them for winter protection. Be patient in the spring for growth because looks can be deceiving. As for the Lilac, thay take a few years to develop buds after planting beacue they are so young. I always make sure that there is no grass around the crown of the shrub, by removing the sod 2 feet in diameter around the stem, to be sure there is no competition for nutrients from the lawn.
