Can anybody advise me how to care for this plant indoors during the winter months. Thank you.

    • Here's your information you need

Hi, I live in zone 6A, Toronto. Mandevillas are tropical plants. When you bring in your plant submerge the pot and all in a deep pail of warm water for approx. 20 minutes. This is to drown any unwanted guests that might like to overwinter inside your home. If you have a sunny window you can cut back the vine to about 12 inches. If you don't have a sunny window you can let it go dormant. Just water when the soil is dry. Do not overwater it or you could drown the root system. Just keep an eye on it for any signs of stress, bugs or such. If you do have a sunny window you can also fertilize it at half strength. If you have grow lights that's even better. It should receive at least 14 - 1 6 hours of grow light a day if you want it to keep on flowering. If you want to keep it dormant do not fertilize, just water enough to keep it alive. It should do just fine. Hope this helps! Cheers! Lorraine

I have had 2 beautiful mandevillas in large pots with trellises so far this summer, but in the past 2 weeks the red one has had both the foliage and flowers (THEY were abundant) dry out, wither, die back. It has been kept watered, fertilized one time a month 10-30-10 (Bloom Plus). After its decline, a few days ago I decided to re-pot it, and change the soil to a non-fertilized soil that would drain fast. In re-potting, I observed that the root system looked extremely healthy, totally unlike the foliage and flowers. Meanwhile, the pink mandevilla with the same care continues to go gang busters. They both have full direct sun from sunrise until about 5 pm, the pink one has sun another couple of hours in the evening, probably. I'm at a loss. Thank you, Charlie

Do you have to cut a mandevilla back when you bring it in for the winter? I would like to bring one in to a nursing home with high ceilings, huge windows and lots of florescent lighting. It's gorgeous right now and it seems a shame to leave it to freeze.

I just purchased two more, one white, one pink, and have had another one for three years. Before frost, I just cut it back to about six or eight inches, put it in the basement, and only give it a cup of water about three times all winter long, it keeps growing great. Now it is outside again and I live in Central Wisconsin. They are beautiful and will continue to go up the trellis by itself, no tying necessary and will grow six feet high or more by the middle of summer. Enjoy!!!

This is the second winter for my red mandevilla. I live on Vancouver island B.C. The first winter I didn't cut it back & I placed it in a southern exposure window in the garage.I watered it once a month. Last spring I brought it out & it burst into blossom. It is now the end of Oct. and it's still full of bloom. I find it is too cumbersome now to move trellis & all to the garage window so I am going to cut it back & see if it continues to bloom prolifically next year. I have enjoyed this plant more than any other plant I have had. It is surprising how hardy this tropical plant is.

My mandevilla too is dropping leaves and turning yeallow. The tendrils are drying up. I had one a couple of years ago and overwintered it and it bloomed last summer until the frost got it. I found them very easy to grow and care for until now. I have only fertilized it once or twice in 3 months. It gets sun from early a.m. until late afternoon. I others I had grew well in the same location. I live in Waterloo, Ont and we did get solid rain for about 10 days and many gloomy days without sun. Would this unusual weather cause this. We are having sunny days now but it appears to be dying. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks,

This year I placed my pink in a large pot in a square laundry basket with handles for an easy move inside for winter. I placed it against the house under a soffit. I then ran fishing line tied to the basket up to the soffit and fastened to cup hooks under the soffit. The plant loved climbing the line (about 12 of them)It gets sun all day til about 3PM. Late PM sun seems to burn them. Has bloomed profusely and is still beautiful now in mid Sept. Moderate water twice a week. This would work on a porch or balcony. Lexington, Ky.

    • re: care for mandevilla

Posted by Judy Bird on Monday, January 18, 2010 7:35 PM AST

Planting 1. Plant mandevilla vine root cuttings in spring, after the threat of frost has passed. Choose a location that receives partial shade and has well-drained soil high in organic content. Spread 1 tbsp. of a high phosphorous 10-20-10 NPK fertilizer over the location prior to planting. Dig a small hole about 5 inches deep and place the root cutting into the hole. Cover with soil and water thoroughly to bring the moisture into contact with the roots. Water once a week until the mandevilla vine has taken root and growth has emerged from the soil. Space plants at least 3 feet apart, as they can grow quite large and need room for growth. Watering 2. Water mandevilla vines three times per week during spring, summer and fall. Reduce watering to once per week during winter, when the plant enters dormancy. Do not allow the soil to become soggy, or the roots will rot. Mandevilla prefers consistently moist soil while it's actively growing, but should be permitted to dry out a bit while dormant. Fertilizing 3. Fertilize mandevilla vine once every two weeks using a 10-20-10 NPK fertilizer. Use half the amount directed by the manufacturer or the plant will focus on growing foliage rather than flowers. Water thoroughly before and after applying to release the nutrients into the soil. Never allow the fertilizer to come into contact with the plant, or root burn can occur. In winter, no fertilization is required, as the plant is dormant and will not absorb the nutrients. Winter Care 4. Mandevilla vines may be brought indoors during winter, or they can be allowed to die in the garden. If you choose to overwinter indoors, remove the soil from around vines carefully, without causing any damage to the roots. Continue until the entire root system is exposed. Fill a container several inches wider in diameter than the root system with a soil comprised of one part peat moss, one part sand and one part potting soil. Form a hole in the middle of the soil mixture, place the mandevilla vine inside and recover with soil. Water thoroughly and bring inside before the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or the mandevilla vine will die. Provide filtered sunlight and weekly watering while the plant is indoors for the best results. Transplant back outdoors in late spring, when the average temperate is above 50 degrees Fahrenheit and all threat of frost has passed. If you choose to allow the vine to die back in winter, it will need to be replaced the following spring. In very warm climates, where winter temperatures don't drop below 50 degrees, mandevilla may be left outdoors all year

I brought my plant in just before the first frost. I also sprayed some eco-friendly pesticides on it to kill the aphids that took home on it. For the first month it looked dead. It lost almost all of its leaves and flowers. I even went and bought a grow bulb to help make sure it was getting enough sun. I was looking at it one day last month and realized it had new growth on it. It has been growing like crazy since.
