Posted by PSTAUBIN on Friday, January 26, 2001 12:00 AM ASTI am a teacher in a grade 3 class and I would like to start flowering plants from seed in my classroom with my students. I would like to know if anyone has good suggestions on what type of plants would be good. My classroom is facing west and is in Ottawa Canada, zone 4B-5A.

Posted by Dawn on Sunday, January 28, 2001 12:00 AM ASTI think Sunflowers for the kids would be great! They are VERY fast to germinate & fun to grow. You can buy 'dwarf' varieties that wouldn't get very big. If you are looking for something smaller, maybe you might consider Marigolds. They too are fast to germinate, and the flowers are in continuous bloom.

Posted by Sue on Friday, March 2, 2001 12:00 AM ASTNastursiums are good. They need to be soaked because they are hard.I soak mine overnight and plant the next day. Also you don't have to fertilize them and they like poor soil. They are also edible.

Posted by sam on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 12:45 PM ASTDwarf sunflowers are great. Children love them.I grew Pacino and Sundance kid in pots and they were really nice. Easy to grow and hardy Zinnias came up in less than a week for me. I like Zig zag, or profusion zinnias, I see in the Vesey catalogue that there is a new sunflower,Starburst Lemon Aura, grows more blooms on the stock and is only 4 feet. In a pot it would probably not grow as tall as in the garden. Have fun.
