  • Reed grass, cat tails, swamp grass

I have been wanting to plant this type of grass in th bottoms of the ditches surrounding my property and have not been very sucessful in the matter. The ditches are very wet must of the yearsprings and the run off down to the lake. I am trying to make the ditches look natural and eliminate the need for cutting them. Does anyone know how to be sucessful in planting these types of plants?

Hello Philip: Did you get any responses to your question regarding grass that could be planted in ditches? Our ditches and pond are full of tall grasses but it is difficult, but not impossible, to get seed (need to walk in the ditch, or ?). Another issue is getting it to grow; it does grow naturally without difficulty. Our farm is near Windsor, Ontario. My brother, who lives in Northern Alberta, is interested in buying seed to serve the same purpose you stated. Do you know if the grass can be used where cattle graze? I would appreciate a response by email. Olga Crocker

We live on a lake in New Brunswick and are having a problem with grass spreading in the water along the shore. This has started about 3 years ago. Nobody likes to swim through it as it is sort of slimy to the touch. Has anybody got ideas how to get rid of this grass safely?

We too have had a problem with the cattails planted around our pond. We paid a premium for waterfront property but haven't been able to see the water except in little snatches here and there. I purchased a Fiskars 12' pruning stick and am delighted with the results. It does not have the cord that regular pole cutters have and the pole is very lightweight. Need a helping hand with the 12' extended length but it works! I have read cutting 2-3" below the water line will help kill. I just want to keep them maintained low enough to enjoy the view so cut at water level. Good luck.

Even if you managed to get rid of the plants, the seeds are viable for many, many years. The right conditions come along and, bang, the problem is back. Normally, the presence of these plants suggest a problem with the water. The plants act as a filter.

I wish to grow blue and yellow flag iris, japanese and Siberian Iris on a wet sloping piece of land covered in swamp grass. How do I deal with all the swamp grass? I would reall like to keep it if I could find a way to tame it as it hides the wild iris already growing there. I am hesitant to start new plants as they will be lost in the grass as well! Help1
