Hi: My neighbour gave me roots/tubors from a Yucca plant; he grows them outdoors and they are beautiful. I am not sure how to plant them and where. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I live in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia

These are plants that belong in FULL sun and are drought tolerant after they are established. Planting them in well drained soil is critical, and the soil need not be rich. If you have a spot where there is sandy soil and full sun, then that's it! :O)

I have two yucca plants that are very tall and I wonder if I can just lop off the tops and let them take their natural course. Can they be planted outdoors and left over the winter? I live in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. Thanks for any hints.

Hi Ralph... I also have a yucca plant outside that I planted last year, northern Ontario, Marathon..... I was just trimming off the yellow leaves from the spring (I am a slow gardener) and noticed a large asparagus looking flower in the middle of the plant... I only have one plant, so no , you don't need the male and female to have flowers... Julie

I've had a yucca plant outside in my perennial bed for nearly 10 years and I am very excited because it's going to bloom for the first time. The stalk is about 3 ft. tall and i check every day to see that it's doing o.k. I cut off the small shoots that appear in the spring and plant them somewhere else.

Many yucca varieties are hardy, even in northern climates where it might get below 0. you should not worry about cutting back the plant until spring, just before it begins to grow again. Leaving the foliage provides winter interest in your garden. The flower stalk may be cut off at any time, even if it is still blooming. Just make sure you use a sharp knife or pruners to make a clean cut. Foliage may be trimmed back as needed. The yucca is resilient and accepts pruning almost as a normal activity.

I have left two Yucca plants outside all winter and live in Oakville Ontario. The leaves are still green. Is there any chance for me to keep them alive now. I have a huge solarium and am wondering if I should prune them as suggested and wait until it gets warmer out to bring them back outside to thrive again...hopefully!

I cut my bloom stalk back after there blooms have died off. Taking it all the way down to the plant. They bloom again every year. The seeds are very difficult to propagate. The best way to get a new plant is as easy as moving a small piece of the root. There amazing. It may take two seasons for them to start. You can move a baby plant too. I do it eary in the season when its not very hot. Dont worry if they look alittle ruff the first year. Moving a bigger plant can be a little touchy on a occassion they dont make it. But give them time they can very well bounce back the following year. You'll know early on if they've been compromised. Ive moved quite afew and only lost one. On the bigger plqants get as much of the root as you can. Good Luck an Yucca on. There great for counry town type ditches you have to mow. Just remember to keep them high enough out of the ditches for the city to dig as they do to keep the water flowing. \
