Bat Flower (S)
Tacca chanterieri
Plant individually, 1” deep, in 6" to 8" pots in coarse, rich, loamy soil that is well-drained. It is often advisable to add extra sand, perlite or vermiculite to your potting mix. Provide a temperature of 15-18C (60-65F) through the winter and 25-29C (75-85F) through the summer. It is best suited for growing in a greenhouse or a humid sunroom. Provide lots of bright light but no direct sunlight. Enjoys summers outside if protected from all wind. Taccas love humidity and would be very happy in a bright bathroom. From spring to fall water often and fertilize weekly with one-quarter strength liquid balanced fertilizer. Water sparingly from November to April to let the plant rest. Re-pot every two to three years in spring; divide plants or put into larger pots. When watering, occasionally add a cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water. The extra oxygen will kill fungus spores, prevent root rot and encourage roots to grow. Not Hardy.
