Snake's Head Iris

Grow snake's head Iris in full sun with average to rich soil that is well-drained (raised beds work best). Soil with a pH higher than six (alkaline) is best. Plant the tubers in fall or early spring about 4 inches deep. Mediterranean in origin, this plant will thrive in sun baked, dry and hot locations. In zones cooler than 7, the snake's head iris does well in containers, dry them out after the foliage dies and over-winter in a cool greenhouse or frost free building. Propagate by dividing the tubers in early summer just as the leaves die back.
