Anise
Pimpinella anisum
Annual.
Sow seed ½" deep outdoors in spring. Does not transplant well. Rows 2.5 to 3 feet apart. Thrives in poor, light, well-drained soil in a sheltered location. Stake or grow in clumps to prevent sprawling. Harvest after the flower umbels have become heavy with ripe brown seeds; cut the heads off before they drop. Dry seeds in a single layer on a paper towel or plate in a dry place. When crisp and dry, rub to separate the seed from the hulls. Separate seeds from the husks and store in airtight containers.
