Broad/Fava Beans

French 'Filet' Beans

Although they are of the same species as bush beans, French Filet varieties are thinner and more tender... with a superb taste!

Tips: Beans prefer a light, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5-7.5. Sow seeds 1" deep and 2" apart in rows 18-24" apart. Sow after danger of frost is past. Untreated seed should not be sown until mid-June or when temperature reaches 18ºC. Keep picked regularly for continued production. Approximately 1600 seeds per pound (200 seeds per 50g package). 125g package will sow about a 50 foot row.

Pole Beans

Tips: Rich, deeply worked soil with pH level of 6.5. If the beans are to be grown in a group, plant in a circle over which a tent of poles may be erected after the first few leaves of the new plants have developed. A mulch of peat moss is beneficial. Climbing or runner beans make efficient use of vertical space and 2 oz (50g) of seed can produce 25 lbs of beans. Plant 2 inches deep and 10 inches apart in a sheltered spot in the garden. This seed is tender. Sow out of doors after all danger of frost is over and soil is warm (65ºF). To encourage continuous production, pick the young, tender pods regularly. Seed Counts: Approximately 100 seeds per 50g package.
