The 'Three Sisters' is an harmonious trio of Corn, Beans and Squash. The ancient native technique of growing these three crops together is companion planting at its finest. - Squash Tip
- Harvest summer squash when they are 4-8 inches long and when their skin is still shiny. Winter squash can be cut later in the summer or early fall before frost. The skin should should be hard enough so that you can't cut it with your fingernail.
- Corn Tip
- Corn is ready when the ears are completely filled and a pierced kernel shows a milky white liquid. A good sign of readiness is when the silk turns brown and crisp. One of the most common questions we are asked is how to keep racoons out of a corn patch. Although nothing is foolproof, our most successful defence has been to install an electric fence around the corn patch with one wire about 4-6" from the ground and a second wire about 12" from ground level.
- Bean Tip
- Harvest regularly for a constant supply. Adding inoculant to your soil is extremely beneficial for increasing bean yields.
