Planting Garlic from Bulbils:
Bulbils are miniature versions of the parent plant. Since they are clones of the original plant they can be used to produce pathogen-free full-sized garlic in 3 to 4 years. These tiny garlic bulbs can be planted in raised beds or a clean garden patch. They are normally planted 1-1.5” apart and covered with about 1” of good compost. Weed with care as the plants look like grass for the first while.
Growing:
Water during the summer to keep them from drying out. Some may scape the first year so trim the scape as soon as it starts to curl, harvest the bulbs when the plants have started to die back. The round bulb can range in size from .25” – 1” in diameter. These rounds should be cured and graded, the larger ones can be replanted, the smaller ones eaten. The garlic can be used like garlic chives or green onions all summer if you don’t plan to replant.
If you are replanting they should be planted 3-4” apart in rows at least 8” apart giving them room to grow. They should scape the second year, these garlic will likely still be only one round clove. Treat them like all other garlic, always planting the biggest cloves, and mulching for the winter. It is important to not plant any diseased or damaged cloves as it can affect your whole planting area. Garlic should not be planted in the same space each year so rotate around your garden space.
In 3-4 years you will be harvesting full-sized disease-free garlic.
