Florence F. vulgare azoricum. Crisp and filled with sweet licorice flavour. Crisp bulb fennel is delicious chopped and served raw with some olive oil, steamed with butter or added to your stir-fries. Orion produces larger bulbs, is more reliable and later to bolt than other types. This hybrid matures in 80 days. Approx. 50 seeds/pkg.
Direct seed fennel mid-spring through late summer or start transplants 4-5 weeks before planting date. Plant outdoors after danger of hard frost has passed. Bolting can result from disturbing the roots. Sow seeds directly into the garden about 1⁄4-1/2 inch deep about 6 to 12 inches apart. Prefers well drained soil and full sun.
Heavy clay soils will hinder seed growth. The beds should be kept moist for 2 weeks or until the first leaves appear. Take care then not to overwater.
Harvest bulbs at 3-4” in diameter.
Aphids, whitefly and lepidopterous larvae can be controlled by floating row cover in areas where they are a problem.
