Tips: "Rutabaga", also called "swede" or "winter turnip", is round or globe shaped with yellow flesh and smooth bluish coloured leaves. Commonly grown for winter storage. "Summer Turnip", is flatter in shape and flesh is usually white. It has a short growing season and is ready for market in about 7-8 weeks. Sow seed as early as the soil can be worked to mature crop for early market. For the main storage crop, plant in late June or early July, so that roots can develop in the cooler weather. Late plantings are less susceptible to root maggot damage. Sow thinly ¼-½" deep. Space young plants to 4-6" apart in row 24-30" apart. Boron is a key trace element for the prevention of Brown Heart (water core) in rutabagas.
